Offer an attribute as a filter

A search filter lets visitors narrow the results down to one or more options of an attribute: a colour, a condition, a brand.

  1. Open the attribute’s form: Settings › Catalog › Listing attributes, then click the attribute. To create one, see Manage listing attributes.
  2. Choose the Checkbox or Dropdown Type, and enter its options.
  3. Set Use as filter to Yes.
  4. Check the Visibility: Everyone or Theme only.
  5. Click Save.

The attribute joins the filters of your storefront’s search results.

The filter and the visibility

  • Everyone: the filter works, and the value also shows in the listing page’s attribute list.
  • Theme only: the filter works, and the value stays out of the listing page’s attribute list. It shows where your theme uses it.

Search from the homepage

The search engine in the homepage banner can offer an attribute with Use as filter set to Yes.

  1. In the menu, under Content, click Theme, then Homepage.
  2. Open the Welcome block section. If it is hidden, switch on Show this section on the homepage.
  3. In Search engine, choose the attribute under Listing attributes. Empty, the banner shows no search form.
  4. Click Save, in the “Unsaved changes” bar that appears at the bottom of the screen.

The list offers the Checkbox or Dropdown attributes with Use as filter set to Yes.

What your users see

On the search results page, each attribute with Use as filter set to Yes offers its options: the visitor picks one or more to narrow the results down. How the filters look depends on your theme.

With an attribute chosen in the banner’s Search engine, the homepage’s search form offers it as a criterion.

Edge cases and limits

  • Only admin visibility: the attribute stays out of the search filters, even with Use as filter set to Yes.
  • Attribute linked to no category: it is not among the filters.
